Hillcrest Park Curling Venue and Percy Norman Aquatic Centre
Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime project.
This multi-phased triumph incorporates facilities for the 2009 Jr. World Curling Championship, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Curling Venue and finally - its signature legacy - a community centre housing the Vancouver Curling Club, a community hockey facility, and an indoor/outdoor aquatic center with a 50 meter competitive swimming pool.
Due to time constraints, this project was constructed under a "fast track" schedule, including both the pre-construction and construction phases. Major trades were contracted under a design-assist scenario, ultimately reducing procurement times and allowing for an earlier construction start.
The structure is a combination of structural steel, reinforced concrete and engineered wood beams, and the building envelope consists of masonry, metal cladding, curtain wall and a single-ply roof membrane. Mechanical and electrical systems are consistent with world class curling and aquatic facilities. The Aquatic Center was designed with a state-of-the-art Ultra Violet filter systems. Ground water and roof drainage is being reclaimed to run irrigation systems and plumbing systems.
While the project itself was designed to achieve LEED® Gold status, the real medal goes to the project team - completing each facility on time and on budget. Of course, we have a feeling this facility will be seeing a lot more gold in the days ahead - not to mention silver and bronze.
