Discovery Green - Building 12
This pristine building is the final installment in the Discovery Place Research Park - a base for high-tech research companies. Though it was designed to attain LEED® Gold, in 2009 Discovery Green was awarded the highest level of designation in the international recognized LEED® program - Platinum. As the first Core and Shell building in Canada to achieved this honor, Discovery Green was also awarded the Top Green Design/Stewardship by NAIOP (National Association of Industrial and Office Properties) for 2007-2009.
The building features VRF (Variable Refigerant Flow), a highly efficient mechanical system, developed in Japan, as well as numerous quiet ceiling fan coil units with movable diffuser locations that allow for an easily adaptable floor layout. The Encelium lighting control system offers light dimming, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting and personal light adjustment options that can be managed from a PC, and reduce energy use by up to 79%! Not sustainable enough? Discovery Green also uses diverted rain water for toilet flushing.
What does LEED® Platinum look like? The entire building was designed to ensure an abundance of natural light, with serene outdoor green spaces, an indoor fitness facility, and walking paths. In addition to being so environmentally friendly, the project made use of locally made products and materials (including recycled materials) in many products and interior finishes.
Talk about innovation.
