NAV Canada
The new state of the art Saskatoon Air Traffic Control Tower (ACT) is the prototype for a new series of control towers to be constructed at medium sized airports across Canada. As such, this project provided a unique challenge for the project team, as many of the construction and operational details were still being finalized as construction proceeded.
The new ATC included such features as a post-tensioned cantilevered slabs at the service and operation levels of the tower and seamless "optically perfect" glazing at the control cab. The ground level operations centre also provides administration and flight planning services for NAV Canada's Saskatoon operations. This new tower represents a quantum leap in technological capability from the previous control tower. The switchover from old tower to new tower was scheduled to take place over the course of a week, with both towers remaining in operation to provide redundancy while the bugs were worked out of the new tower. However, the NAV Canada personnel felt secure enough in their new facility that the old tower was abandoned after only 2 hours of duplicate operations.
The new Air Traffic Control Tower will serve as a Saskatoon landmark for many years and further reinforces Stuart Olson Dominion's reputation as a builder that can deliver the facility required to meet each client's unique needs.
